Terre Bleue
2023
Paul Éluard's phrase, "La terre est bleue comme une orange," French for “The Earth is blue like an orange” has always resonated with me — a poetic yet perplexing juxtaposition of imagery. With this work, I aimed to explore the semiotics of this phrase, bridging the literary essence of Éluard's words with the computational capabilities of the Processing platform.
Drawing inspiration from the academic realms of colour theory and the Impressionists' evocative play of hues, I've juxtaposed almost complementary colours. The delicate blue letters, against a soft orange background, aim to encapsulate Éluard's surrealistic envisioning of our world — a clumsy balance between the tangible and the abstract. It's a dance of perception, where the fragility and layering of our understanding are mirrored through transparency.
But beyond colour, it was essential for me to dwell deeper into the architecture of the words themselves. The words undergo a metamorphosis, shedding their structural skins to birth an intricate web of dynamic lines. These lines go into abstraction, perhaps deconstruction, reminiscent of the elusive, intricate networks of meaning and connections hidden beneath each letter and word, like a Derridean 'trace’. I hope this piece becomes more than just a visual experience. It is an invitation to ponder, challenge, and reimagine our perceptions, much like Éluard’s poetic vision.
